MILTON, John. PARADISE LOST. A POEM IN TWELVE BOOKS. THE NINTH EDITION, WITH NOTES OF VARIOUS AUTHORS, BY THOMAS NEWTON. Two volume set, bound in full contemporary calf, copper-plate engravings. Published by J.F. and C. Rivington et al, London. 1790. 9th edition, hb leather, 8vo, Vol. I: [ii], blank, [A2-11], [14], i-lxxxvi, [i-xxviii], 250, 1-3, 254-510. Vol. II: 1-447, [448]-463, index, advertisement.

Newton (1704-1782) was Bishop of Bristol and a Fellow of Trinity College,
Cambridge. In 1768, he became Dean of St. Paul's, London. He wrote an
autobiography, a work on the prophecies, and sermons, but is best known for his editorship of Milton's PARADISE LOST, which was first published in 1749. This edition contains an extensive life of Milton, and an exhaustive Index, as well as a number of fine, copper engravings by G. Vertue from the 1750 edition. Bound in full, contemporary, calf, with gilt ornamentation and rules to spine, and black leather spine labels. Competently re-backed in the late 19th, or possibly early 20th, century and, more recently, hinges of both volumes repaired with japanese paper. Boards show considerable wear, especially to edges, but joints still tight. A few early ink scribbles to feps. Foxing throughout, more so to preliminary pages of volume I; otherwise text clean. A sturdy set, to be handled with respect but not trepidation.
