LANGHORNE, John and William Langhorne [with corrections and additions by the Rev. Francis Wrangham, M.A. F.R.S.]. PLUTARCH'S LIVES, TRANSLATED FROM THE ORIGINAL GREEK; WITH NOTES CRITICAL AND HISTORICAL AND A LIFE OF PLUTARCH.
Six volume set, uniformly bound in 3/4 leather over marbled boards, with engraved frontispiece to volume I. Printed for J. Mawman et al, London. 1809. 8vo.
Wrangham (1769-1842) was a classical scholar and noted Plutarch authority. John Langhorne (1735-1779) was a poet who, with his brother William (1721-1772) (also a poet and translator), first published this English translation in 1770. It went through six editions, before being freshly re-cast in 1809 by Wrangham. Volume I contains Wrangham's effusive printed Dedication to the Viscount Milton, dated December 1, 1808, and volume VI contains an extensive Index.
Each of the volumes in this handsome set is bound in 3/4 calf, with the gilt-decorated spines in compartments and ornamented with two morocco spine labels. The endpapers are marbled to compliment the boards; the foredges are stained a curious corn yellow. Each volume shows some wear to extremities and corners, with rubbing to marbled areas of boards. The joints of all volumes are still tight, although there is some evidence of initial splitting at the crown and foot of the spines. The front hinge of volume I is cracked; all other hinges are nice and tight. Internally, all volumes are in excellent condition, with minimal foxing, or age-toning. There are no markings, or interlineations to the text. Overall, a very good set. Pagination: vol. I, pp. xcvi, 465; vol. II, pp. 659; vol. III, pp. 563; vol. IV, pp. 648; vol. V, pp. 518; vol. VI, pp. 443.
