The first edition of the first volume of Pope's "Works" was published by Tonson (quarto edition) and Lintot (folio edition) in 1717. This is the first edition of the second volume of his "Works", published nine years before Pope's death. The title page is printed in red and black lettering; followed by "the Author to the Reader" (dated Jan. 1, 1734); and (at pp. 1-58), "An Essay on Man, Being the Full Book of Ethic Epistles..Written in the Year 1732."; and (at pp. 1-160) "Ethic Epistles, the Second Book", "Ethic Epistles, the Third Book. To Several persons.", "Satires of Horace Imitated, with Satires of Dr. Donne, Versify'd by the same hand.", "Satires of Dr. John Donne.", and "Epitaphs". In original calf, now freshly re-backed with five raised bands and ornamentation to spine. Hinges reinforced with japon paper and original endpapers re-laid. Contents quite clean, with only occasional slight foxing. Small, neat, ink signature and date to top right of half title page. Altogether a most handsome copy in very good condition.
