WOOD, Anthony [Anthony A Wood]. HISTORIA ET ANTIQUITATES UNIVERSITATIS OXONIENSIS.

Freshly and professionally restored and re-backed.. Published at Oxonii (Oxford) in 1674.. Publisher not stated 1674. This is the first edition. Folio, pp. 414, 448. Two books bound as one, with appendix, explanatory note, table of contents, folding aerial map of Oxford, and folding plate.

Anthony Wood (later Anthony A Wood) lived from 1632-1695 and was an antiquary and historian. He was graduated from Oxford in 1652 with a BA degree, and his HISTORIA ET ANTIQUITATES UNIV. OXON. was first published in 1674, with an English translation undertaken by John Gutch, and published in 1791-1796. Wood was expelled from the university for libel (see Dict. of Nat. Bio. p. 3277). This copy of the first edition bound in original calf, but freshly and professionally repaired and re-backed, with new spine, morocco label, and new endpapers. With full page engraving of Charles II,
on his throne, granting charter, followed by title page, with vignette of Sheldonian Theatre. Both pages neatly repaired, but still showing foxing and light soiling consistent with age. Early "copperplate" signature on top right of title page. Between p. 306 and 307 of the first volume is a two-page folding engraving of Habitus Academici in Universitate Oxoniensi (Academic Dress/Costume at Oxford University). The plate is sl. foxed, lightly soiled and has been tabbed. A legend, or explanation, of the academic costume is at the
bottom of the engraving. At the beginning of the second volume is found a
two-page folding engraved aerial view of Oxford with a legend - in English - of the more particular and famous sites and buildings. It bears a date of 1675 andalso appears to have been tipped-in, or tabbed in place. The margins of this plan are folded and show some minor edge wear. There is an old stain to the bottom right corner, and some foxing and age-toning.
